Seems like a lot of people are getting the error, “Sorry, the Gmail mobile app will not work on your phone. Your phone doesn’t have the appropriate certificate to communicate with Gmail. Try accessing Gmail on your mobile browser at http://m.gmail.com.“ when running Gmail for mobile application.
There’s a link on how to resolve this issue in Google Groups: Gmail for Mobile:- proper certificate for seK700i solved, gmail is working.
I have tried out the steps given there on the Nokia S40 Emulator. Hey! It works!

The certificate required by Gmail Mobile Application is available for download at http://www.verisign.com/support/roots.html. I have extracted the required certificate from the downloaded zip file to make it easier for others to download it.
Here’s a simple guide to get the required certificate to resolve the “Your phone doesn’t have the appropriate certificate to communicate with Gmail“ error.
- Download the certificate at http://www.fourteenfloor.com/files/PCA3ss_v4.cer to your PC. (You can try downloading it directly using your mobile phone’s web browser and see if it works. It didn’t on the Nokia S40 emulator.)
- Transfer the certificate into your mobile phone.
- Start or download Gmail for Mobile Application.

I am trying to think of a reason why should I use new Gmail mobile. I have many accounts (Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL…) and with gmail mobile I can’t watch them over, I have to use another app for other then gmail. I use Movamail http://movamail.com/ that can open any account there is and I am satisfied with it. Eventually I will remove gmail and continue to use Movamail only for practical use.
Decide for your self.

I can get the file onto my series 40 nokia, but where do I put the file where gmail expects to find it?

I can’t remember where I put the certificate file in the S40 emulator. Maybe someone can help point us in the right direction?

to activate certificates use nokia’s pc suite. in the explorer of it files with extention *.cer are indentified and could be import. may be the files have the wrong extention *.txt (because the mobile automatically attach it) and you should rename/delete this wrong extention.
