Reading Daily Devotional on Your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android Phone

8 Apr

If you’re interested to read Mobile Daily Devotionals on your latest Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android phone, I’m working on converting daily devotional RSS feeds into EPUB books. The iPhone and iPod touch can read EPUB books using Stanza. Aldiko is an EPUB reader for Android phones. I have a couple of EPUB daily devotionals (Heartlight Daily Devotionals and Charisma Magazine Daily Devotionals) available over at JARSS.com.

When I first started created Mobile Daily Devotional java midlets for mobile phones in 2006, the coolest phone was either a Nokia, Motorola or Sony Ericsson phones. A phone with 176×220 pixels was considered a high resolution phone. Most phones came with J2ME support.

Today, phones with 320×240 pixels are the norm. The coolest phone is the latest version of iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile or Symbian smartphone, depending on which phone you fancy. J2ME is considered ancient technology. The iPhone doesn’t even support J2ME. Android doesn’t come with J2ME support built-in. There’s a third-party J2ME MIDP Runner for running J2ME midlets on the Android phone. For Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, support for J2ME depends on the phone manufacturer. Some add J2ME support, some don’t.

Like any technology, J2ME will one day become obsolete. Adding daily devotional EPUB books to this site is a simple way of keeping up with the latest technology. EPUB is an open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum. EPUB books can be read on the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android phones, and on dedicated ebook readers from Sony, COOL-ER, Booken, BeBook, IREX and others.

If you’ve one of the newer phone or ebook reader described above, it would be great if you could try out the EPUB daily devotionals on your device. I have only tested the EPUB books on the Android SDK Emulator and Adobe Digital Edition software. Your feedback and suggestions are most welcomed. Thanks.

Reading Daily Devotional RSS Feeds on Your Cell Phone

5 Apr

I’ve just finished the beta version of my website for an Offline Mobile RSS Feed Reader for java enabled cell phones. It’s basically a website that generates RSS Feed Reader java apps with embedded RSS feeds as content. The reason for embedded RSS feeds is to make a usable Feed Reader without the need for a GPRS or 3G data connection. Not everyone subscribes to a data package for their cell phone.

An Offline RSS Feed Reader is especially useful for those places where you cannot get a good data connection. It’s frustrating trying to surf the net using your phone when the data connection is slow or unstable. The phone browser cycle of click, wait, read a bit, click again, wait again, read a bit again … is tiring.

So, how do you read the latest RSS Feeds if the RSS Feeds are embedded with the java app? Just download the latest java app with the latest RSS feeds onto your PC and transfer it to your phone again.

Currently I have Charisma Magazine and Heartlight.org daily devotional auto-refreshed and re-generated twice a day. Just get the latest jar file from http://www.jarss.com.
