Central Asia and Community Development
Below is the editorial for Global Prayer Digest November 2007.
Dear Praying Friends
For the past 100 years, Western missionaries have debated about what should be given priority in mission work: Evangelism or helping the physical needs of the people. Some say that with empty stomachs and dire poverty as their constant companions, the lost will not hear the gospel. Others argue that preaching the gospel is most crucial because the lost will otherwise spend eternity without Jesus. Both arguments have a degree of truth in them. However, we can remember that helping the peoples of the world climb out of poverty not only gives them better lives, but it gives them reason to praise our Savior.
There is still a window of opportunity to demonstrate the gospel through community development in Central Asia. The door is small, and dangerous. But for those who walk through it, there is an opportunity to extend the abundant life Christ offers to people who still wait to hear. Let’s pray for workers who will walk through those doors!
In Christ alone,
