Hindu South Asia and Globalization

Below is a sampler for Global Prayer Digest taken from the devotional reading for 1st September 2007.

DATE: September 1, 2007

FOCUS: Hindu Bengalis in West Bengal, India

DETAILS:
In 1806, something happened at Williams College in Massachusetts that would have international significance. It started with five students on a picnic! The discussion about the need for mission work had been so intense that no one noticed how dark the sky had become. Suddenly the heavens opened. The students dashed for the nearest shelter, the overhanging eaves of a haystack. Before the rain had stopped, they had committed their lives to foreign missions. These students were Gordon Hall and his closest friends, Adoniram Judson, Samuel Mills, Samuel Newell, and Samuel Nott. From then on, their days of study were interspersed with meetings of a group called “The Brethren.” All of them were determined to start a mission organization.

The new missionaries sailed in 1812. They reached Calcutta, where the Judsons boarded a ship bound for Mauritius, east of Africa. Since none of the missionaries had permission to work in India, the East India Company, officially in charge, insisted that they leave Calcutta or be jailed. Hall and Nott escaped to Bombay. But even there they were not welcomed. It wasn’t until more than three years later, that the men were finally given permission to remain in India. By then Hall had done some translation, and they had opened two schools. Gordon Hall was also increasingly busy taking care of the sick, first treating patients with leprosy, malaria, cholera, and guinea worm while still in Bombay. (Continued tomorrow)

Pray for today’s missionaries to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matt. 10:16 KJV)-AL

GEN. 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis is called the book of beginnings. Consider what God created during that exciting week of creation: the infinite heavens, the glorious splendor of light and color, firm land, vast, restless seas, and profuse plant and animal life. Then God breathed life into His crown of creation: man. He was made in God’s own image, to have dominion in His name over all other creatures God had made. The very first verse of the Bible describes the scope of God’s interest and activity-the entire heavens and earth. Likewise, we must remember that God does not value one people group above another. He made us all, and He loves us all. God’s plan is that one day, in Christ, all peoples will be represented in the company of the redeemed.

Let it be, Lord!

The devotional below is taken from the Prayer, Praise and Promises devotional for 15th September.

A Balanced Diet

Read Psalm 104:14-18

The psalmists were captivated by the God of creation. Of course, the world they lived in was a little cleaner, a little purer, maybe a little more beautiful, because man had not yet exploited it. They recognized their dependence on Him for their sustenance: “He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth, and wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengthens man’s heart” (vv. 14,15).

Food, wine, oil, bread—these were staples for Jewish people in that day. Do not think that because the psalmist mentions wine he’s talking about drunkenness. The Bible certainly warns against being drunk. Rather, he says that God supplies our every physical need and even above and beyond those needs. “God . . . gives us richly all things to enjoy” (I Tim. 6:17).

In the Bible wine is a picture of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, when the people of God were rejoicing and worshiping and praising the Lord, the crowd said, “They are full of new wine” (Acts 2:13). Do you have the joy of the Spirit today? “Be not drunk with wine,” Paul said, “but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18).

Oil also is a picture of the Holy Spirit, who makes the face to shine. Moses had a shining face because he fellowshipped with God. Stephen had a shining face because he gave his life for God. Jesus had a shining face on the Mount of Transfiguration.

Bread is a picture of the Word of God. It strengthens the heart. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Luke 4:4).

God wants to give us gladness; He wants to give us radiance; and He wants to give us strength. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to make the child of God more like Jesus.

* * *

Do you maintain a balanced spiritual diet with the staples God provides? Food, wine, oil and bread are symbols of how He nurtures and nourishes you. Feed on His Word and allow the Spirit to control your life.

Prayer, Praise and Promises devotionals for September are taken from Psalm 100 to Psalm 107. Get it for your mobile phone from the Devotions by Warren Wiersbe download page.

Daily In Christ Book Cover

Neil and Joanne Anderson’s best-selling devotional provides down-to-earth guidance, biblical insight, and spiritual inspiration to help you discover your identity in Christ, grow in the truth of God’s Word, discern God’s guidance and will, recognize and overcome the enemy’s deception, and walk Daily in Christ according to the Spirit. Each day’s selection concludes with a brief prayer and motivating challenge for Christlike living.

Below is the devotional for 4th September taken from Daily in Christ.

LIFE ON THE CUTTING EDGE

… Who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong (Hebrews 11:33, 34).

Is faith a risk? Of course. But failing to step out in faith is to risk missing real life. I have been challenged by the following thought from an unknown author.

Risk

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement.
To place our ideas, our dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.

Risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love … live. Chained by his certitudes, he is a slave; he has forfeited freedom.

What a privilege for us to be able to walk by faith in God Himself, armed with all the promises of His Word. I suppose we all desire the security of the solid tree trunk, but the fruit is out on the limb. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The timid soul asks, “What do I stand to lose if I do it?” The fruit-bearing Christians asks, “What do I stand to lose if I don’t do it?” Real life is lived on the cutting edge.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me stand up for what is right, to reach out and love others, and to dare to believe.

Twenty Cans of Success

9 Aug

Someone has said that success comes in cans and failure in cannots. The “Twenty Cans of Success,” taken from God’s Word, will expand your knowledge of our faith-object, the Almighty God. Building your faith by internalizing these truths over the next two days will help lift you from the miry clay of the cannots to the reality that in Christ you can do all things. – Neil Anderson

  1. Why should I say I can’t when the Bible says I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13)?
  2. Why should I lack when I know that God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)?
  3. Why should I fear when the Bible says God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)?
  4. Why should I lack faith to fulfill my calling knowing that God as allotted to me a measure of faith (Romans 12:3)?
  5. Why should I be weak when the Bible says that the Lord is the strength of my life and that I will display strength and take action because I know God (Psalm 27:1; Daniel 11:32)?
  6. Why should I allow Satan supremacy over my life when He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4)?
  7. Why should I accept defeat when the Bible says that God always leads me in triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14)?
  8. Why should I lack wisdom when Christ became wisdom to me from God and God gives wisdom to me generously when I ask Him for it (1 Corinthians 1:30; James 1:5)?
  9. Why should I be depressed when I can recall to mind God’s lovingkindness, compassion, and faithfulness and have hope (Lamentations 3:21-23)?
  10. Why should I worry and fret when I can cast all my anxiety on Christ who cares for me (1 Peter 5:7)?
  11. Why should I ever be in bondage knowing that there is liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is (2 Corinthians 3:17)?
  12. Why should I feel condemned when the Bible says I am not condemned because I am in Christ (Romans 8:1)?
  13. Why should I feel alone when Jesus said He is with me always and He will never leave me nor forsake me (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5)?
  14. Why should I feel accursed or that I am the victim of bad luck when the Bible says that Christ redeemed me from the curse of the law that I might receive His Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14)?
  15. Why should I be discontented when I, like Paul, can learn to be content in all my circumstances (Philippians 4:11)?
  16. Why should I feel worthless when Christ became sin on my behalf that I might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21)?
  17. Why should I have a persecution complex knowing that nobody can be against me when God is for me (Romans 8:31)?
  18. Why should I be confused when God is the author of peace and He gives me knowledge through His indwelling Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:33; 2:12)?
  19. Why should I feel like a failure when I am a conqueror in all things through Christ (Romans 8:37)?
  20. Why should I let the pressures of life bother me when I can take courage knowing that Jesus has overcome the world and its tribulations (John 16:33)?
