Gmail for Mobile Phone Screenshots

Here are some screenshots from Gmail’s latest downloadable J2ME Java application.

1. Download

The http://gmail.com/app download page will recognize the device accessing it and display the link to download the application. The download page shows Nokia 6270 because that’s what the S40 emulator is emulating. On my Motorola PEBL, the page says “Get the new faster Gmail application now! Download Gmail for the Motorola PEBL. (US/Canada)”

Using Firefox on my PC to access the link, I was redirected to the Google Mobile Index Page.

3. Downloading

Should complete within a few seconds over a GPRS connection.

This link http://gmail.com/app is the only way to download the application to your mobile phone. I did not find any option to download the jar file to a PC and then have it synced over to a phone. I suppose not having the option to download and sync will make providing technical support easier for Google.

4. Sign In

Oops! Failed to sign in using the Nokia S40 Emulator. The error says “Sorry, the Gmail mobile app will not work on your phone. Your phone doesn’t have the appropriate certificate to communicate with Gmail. Try accessing Gmail on your mobile browser at http://m.gmail.com”.

5. Loading

After signing in once, the next time the application is started, it goes to fetch the latest mails. You don’t see any mails here because of the certificate error on the emulator.

The Username and Password are stored in the phone to eliminate the need to sign in every time. This option can be turned off in the Settings screen under the “Always keep me signed in” option. If you have a long or complex username and password, keeping this option checked removes the pain of having to use phone keypad for data entry.

6. Menus

I won’t be using the Compose Mail feature often. It’s a pain to write an email on a phone. For me, Gmail mobile will be used mainly for reading mails.

7. Settings

There’s no option to “Use small fonts” on my Motorola PEBL. So, it looks like there will be some additional features for different phones.

I had a problem with my V800 I got a “certificate not valid” error. I am using Movamail http://movamail.com/ for 3 month and I never had problems. Should I use Gmail mobile?
