Splash screen for Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread Splash Screen

The screen capture above is taken from the Nokia S40 Emulator. Looks kinda bland. The splash screen appears and goes away too fast on the Sony Ericsson emulator for a screen capture.

On my Motorola PEBL, the splash screen appears after 4-5 seconds. It goes away after another 4-5 seconds. Total application loading time is around 9-10 seconds.

You are welcome to try this new beta version available at Our Daily Bread downloads.

Global Prayer Digest Sept 2006

Global Prayer Digest’s focus for the month of September 2006 is on “South Asia: Home of the Diverse Hindu Peoples”.

Get it for your mobile phone from Global Prayer Digests downloads.

_“Dear Praying Friends

Though there are roughly 800 million Hindus in the world, they are mostly concentrated in South Asia, the region we will pray for this month. Nepal is officially a Hindu kingdom, and India has a Hindu majority.

Though Hinduism is a flexible and diverse religion, it is very easy for Westerners to try to reach them in foreign terms. These efforts are likely to fail if we don’t understand the Hindu system or cultures. There are millions of Hindu gods, but many high caste Hindus worship only one or two of them. There are not many central Hindu religious doctrines, but people in this part of the world (like any other part for that matter) resent having outsiders expect them to turn from their culture when they give their allegiance to a different God. Is it possible to present the gospel in an Indian cup?

For this reason, it is important for us to pray for groups like the Friends Missionary Prayer Band and India Gospel Outreach. These groups send only Indian nationals, who are financially supported almost entirely by Indian believers. Western funds only give the Hindu majority the impression that Christian evangelism is turning their people away from their cultural roots.

Pray this month that Hindus in Nepal and India, and Muslims in Bangladesh and the Maldive Islands will turn their sole allegiance to Jesus, the King of Kings.

In Christ,
Keith Carey
Managing Editor GPD”_

My Amazon.com aStore

20 Aug

Amazon.com aStore

I’m opening my own book store! Made possible by Amazon.com’s new aStore.

Amazon.com recently started offering its associates the opportunity to open their own store with products from its huge catalog. Creating a store is a simple 5 step process:

  1. Selecting your featured products
  2. Add Category Pages (for the search and browsing section)
  3. Edit Color and Design (including Edit Your Store Name)
  4. Select Widgets (for your sidebar)
  5. Finish and Get Link

I created my store in around 5 minutes.

It’s really that easy!

Here’s the link to my store Leadership Books.

My featured items are populated with books by John Maxwell. I’ve enjoyed and benefited much from his books. David Allen’s Getting Things Done is the only non-Maxwell book in the featured items.

Leadership Books by John Maxwell

Leadership. Responsibility? Privilege?

I’ve been reading books and listening to tapes by “John Maxwell”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&tag=livingonthefo-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&location=/gp/search%3F%26index=books%26keywords=John%20Maxwell%20Leadership%26_encoding=UTF8 on the area of leadership over the past 1 year. There’s so much that I’ve learnt and still am learning in this area. If I had knew what I’m learning now 10 years ago, what a great difference it would have made in my life. Anyway, it’s better late than never. If you’re suddenly thrust into a position of leadership, sometimes it can feel like being in a small boat in a stormy sea. John’s books will help you navigate through your leadership storms.

Thinking about improving your leadership skills? Get the book 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, read it and apply it to your life. Your leadership ability and effectiveness will never be the same.

I have put together some quotations from the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership into a mobile phone application, to remind myself of these 21 laws. Click here to download the 21-laws.jar.

Global Prayer Digest Beta on Nokia with Next Command Global Prayer Digest Beta on Sony Ericsson with Next Command

New enhancements:

  • Faster startup time (30% faster)
  • “Next” command to display next day’s article
  • Display today’s article on startup

On my Motorola PEBL, the startup time for Our Daily Bread and Global Prayer Digest used to be around 13-15 seconds. With the latest enhancements, it is now 8-11 seconds. On Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets, the startup time should be faster compared to Motorola handsets. The improved startup time came with an increase in jar file size of around 6K. For those interested to know, the xml parser used in the mobile reader has been changed from the kxml-min parser to the xpp3 parser.

The feature to display today’s article on startup has been requested by 2 persons. Great for those who cannot remember the current date. It’s also a time saver eliminating the need to scroll to the end of the list during month end.

The “Next” command is a short-cut to the next day’s article without having to navigate back to the list.

You can try out the enhanced reader for the August edition of Our Daily Bread and Global Prayer Digest.

These enhancements are still in beta status. They have been tested in a limited manner on my Motorola PEBL, Sony Ericsson SDK Emulator and Nokia S40 Emulator. If you meet with any bugs or have any features that you would like to see added into the mobile reader, post a comment here or send me your feedback via the Contact Page. Thanks!

Google Transcoder for Mobile Phone

6 Aug

Last month, I wrote about visitors using their mobile phones to view this site and my desire to create a mobile version of this site for them. Actually, there’s no need for me to do so, as Google has already done all the hardwork.

The Google Wireless Transcoder does a pretty decent job of transcoding websites for mobile devices. Here’s a Nokia S40 Emulator screenshot of this site after being transcoded.

Google Transcoded fourteenfloor.com

You can try this out using Your mobile phone. http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=www.fourteenfloor.com.

The Google Wireless Transcoder can be used to visit your favourite sites with your mobile phone or device. Just go to http://www.google.com/gwt/n and enter your URL.

For those who are curious, here’s the list of mobile phones that visited this site for the past 5 days:

  • MOT-RAZRV3xv
  • Nokia6101
  • Nokia6610
  • Nokia6230i
  • SAMSUNG-SGH-D600E
  • SAMSUNG-SGH-T509
